Calendar – March

This month’s calendar picture was taken at the Withrow Nature Preserve. The Withrow Nature Preserve has many trails that really just allow you to disappear and escape. This particular bend reminded me of to take the road less traveled.

More Stories to Come

I am sure I will share more about Kaya and I will probably take just short of a ton of pictures of her. But to close out my selfish week, I will leave you to the explanation of her name and one last overdose of cuteness.
As for her name….Kaya is is pronounced KAH-yah and is Japanese for forgiveness. Rein is a restraining influence or controlling or guiding power. So yes her name has some significant meaning….that’s just how I roll.

I Found Her!

Still Going…
Long story short, it is here that I fell in love and found my puppy.
Kaya was one of two Bisho Frise/Shih Tzu mixes (aka a Zuchon or Shichon). In talking with the lady she educated me on the breed because it was one I had never heard of. Here’s some of what I learned….The Bichon Shih Tzu, or Zuchon, has resulting traits of both the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu breeds. The Bichon is known for its white, “powder puff” fur and its happy temperament as well as its hypoallergenic qualities. The Shih Tzu is known for being intelligent, alert and also very stubborn. It has a double coat of long, silky fur. Both breeds are two of the oldest breeds known. Offspring of the two usually have a soft, curly hypoallergenic coat (in any color), with the Bichon’s temperament and the Shi Tzu’s intelligence. Bichon Shih Tzu mixes are believed to have fewer health problems than their purebred parents. It is good for condo life because it doesn’t require a lot of exercise and doesn’t bark much. They are also really good with kids of all ages. Apparently just shy of perfection.
After playing with her and seeing her interactions I took the plunge. Unfornately she wasn’t apart of the Science Diet deal and since it wasn’t a rescue or shelter her price didn’t include some of the stuff other places offer, but I found the right one. Part of me feels bad that I didn’t rescue an animal from a shelter, but it certainly isn’t for lack of trying. For everything that I found that might work, it ended up being the wrong breed or not available or everything that was available was too big for what I am allowed and the space I have.
Here is our very first picture together. Taken with my cell phone so the quality is less than ideal but there will be more pictures to come to make up for it.
Good but Not the Right One

The Story Still Going….
I was irate if I am honest. I basically came unglued. After regaining my composure I ventured on to meet the next puppy, Ana, a jack russell terrier. Ana was perfect on paper. Already spayed, updated on all her shots, crate trained, and house broken but once meeting her in personal I had some reservations. She had no lease training and was horrible on a leash. She would literally gag herself while on a lease because she pulled the lease so hard. Plus she was distant. She had no interest in me and those things really made me think twice. So I decided I would head off to see the others and call the foster for the animal and ask some questions.
After lunch which allowed me some time to chill. I was waiting on calls from a couple other places to visit them and I had an appointment to see 2 more animals at another Petsmart. I decided to venture to a little store front place up in Hamilton. I had been referred there several times and had been there previously and had a comfort level. It wasn’t a shelter or a rescue but it wasn’t a Petland either.
Watch out she’s coming to steal your heart!
Searching for the Right One

The Story contiunes…
Saturday, Jan 24th, was Science Diet’s Change A Pet’s Life day. Which basically meant that Science Diet was covering the adoption fees. So I thought what a prefect day to adopt. So I contacted various shelters in regards to particular puppies they had. I filled out their adoption forms and in every case I was pre-approved for adoption.
From there I scheduled times to meet the various puppies I was interested in and each agency knew I was looking at several different animals. I wanted to meet the puppies in person to interact with them and see how they were and to see if there was that magical “connection”.
So bright and early Saturday morning I started the trek. First stop, was an animal rescue out in Amelia. Let me just say that within moments on pulling into the place both Steph and I had second thoughts. Needless to say the puppy I was interested in was not on site because either it was already adopted or had died because many in the litter died because of reactions to shots. I’m pretty sure they aren’t up to code. But they said go check out the Petsmart in Milford because we have a bunch of animals there that will meet your needs. So off I went…and I discovered by bunch they meant 2. And by meet my needs they meant completely opposite of what you want.
And besides, whose cuter than this little fuzz ball?
Selfish Week
Posted by Cindy | Filed under Stories
So this week, the 24th, marks the one month anniversary of welcoming a new addition into my home. What is that new addition? An adorable Bisho Frise/Shih Tzu (aka a Zuchon or Shichon) puppy. The adorable white fuzzball with legs is named Kaya Rein and she has simply stolen my heart.
It was a semi-long and defintely pain staking process to find the right addition to my home, but it was completely worth it.
Over the course of this week I will share snippets of her story and our meeting. Not to mention pictures, so she can steal your heart as well.
I had been researching various breeds of dogs and making preparations to adopt for months. I researched various rescue organizations, figuring out what a puppy needs vet wise, what cost what and where those items are cheaper at. I started a “puppy” savings fund to have some extra funds building for those unexpected costs.
Plus there is the fact that I love dogs and I always had one when I was younger, but I didn’t live in a place that would allow me to have one until now. So the urge that was always there was much more powerful.
I had every intention of waiting till March but sometimes my patience and my good intentions don’t often meet.
Plus with a face like this how can you resist?
Till the Next Time

Caleb – In the Details

I am not a person who likes feet. I don’t even like looking at my own. But baby feet, baby feet are just simple adorable. I couldn’t resist taking a detail shot of Caleb’s little feet and toes.
Caleb, I don’t know where your feet will take you in your life. I hope and pray that the paths you will walk will lead others to a greater understanding of love and compassion.
A Father’s Love

I can’t show you a wonderful picture of Mom and not show one of Dad.
I must confess this one is staged but it is still a sweet, tender moment.
I will always be amazed how much we can love someone who we’ve just met, yet known for all of our lives.
