2009 Summer of Service – The Band

As a photographer I get to take part in a lot of amazing things – capturing a special family moment to the wonderful beauty of the creation around us to live music at it’s finest. But once a year I get to take part in something called Summer of Service and it is one of the things I love to photograph.

This week I would like to showcase the student worship band. They lead worship each morning and on Monday night. I was blown away by their talent.

This is Gabrielle and she sings.  It was incredibly surreal to see Gab on stage as she is a friend of mine and someone who I have known since she was in 4th grade.  I had never heard her sing with the band before and when she took lead on one of the songs I was literally stopped in my tracks.

100 Strangers

One of the things I wanted to accomplish this year is to “start and finish the 100 strangers project“.

The purpose of the project is to stop people wherever you are, talk with them, and ask if you can take a portrait. It’s about getting to know people and their story and practicing the art of photography. You are supposed to post the story and the picture together to the pool in Flickr.

Last night (after months of the want to’s) I finally took my first 100 Strangers portrait!

Meet Shelby -

Shelby goes to Princeton HS here in Cincinnati and like me, she loves both music and photography. Not only do we have the same loves but she has taken photographs of a one of the same local bands that I have! Shelby and I had a great convo about cameras and music. This is her 3rd year coming to SOS and her friendly personality made her the perfect start for this project!

Shelby had some amazing shoes that just needed their picture taken as well.

Shelby thanks for coming up and saying hi. May your smile encourage all you meet!

The Heilman Family

In visiting other areas of Krohn they had a section set up to where you could see various butterflies throughtout their growing process.  One of the stations at a magnifying glass at it and that is when this photo op presented itself.

It has been nicknamed cuteness maginifed.

To the Heilman family, thank you for allowing me the pleasure of photographing Samantha.  May your family always make each other smile and may her curiousity teach her all the joys in life.

The Heilman Family

I’ll admit it was crowded and a bit crazy but it was a lot of fun to take pictures in the butterfly show.  It took a while to get a butterfly to land so we could get a picture but we found one willing to make it’s Photos By CRT debut.

The Heilman Family

One of my favorite things about taking pictures of kids is there love for their stuffed animals or blankets.

In this case it was Curious George.  How cute is Curious George?!

The Heilman Family

Once we decided to make our way into the line we found some fun stuff.  There was a stage and a mirror – which made for a great photo op.

The Heilman Family

The Heilman family opted to brave Krohn in the midst of the butterfly show. We knew that we might have a wait and we would have to be careful of the crowd while taking pictures but we were willing to try.

Before we went into the butterfly show we spent some time roaming around Krohn to get warmed up for the pictures. This picture happened in the big butterfly chair that happen to be sitting in the doorway this particular day.
